8 UNEPIANS AFFILIATE 5TH PSM REGIONAL CON
Eight delegates from UNEP composed of two instructors: Arnel S. Jardinel and Ma. Eugenia T. Grageda; and six Bachelor of Secondary Education Science major students namely Medalou T. Aguila, Rio France B. Baeta, Joel B. Balbuena, Vanessa Camille M. Hontalba, Kristine Winhor B. Peña and Raymond T. Toralde headed their way to the city of Naga to attend the 5th Regional Convention & Scientific Meeting held at Regent Hotel last November 24, 2012.
The event was spearheaded by the Philippine Society for Microbiology Inc. (PSM) Bicol Chapter. Enthused with the theme “Microbiology and Biotechnology: Adapting to the Changing Microbial World”, the highlights of the convention were the different lectures all about Microbiology and Biotechnology to name such:
The first topic was regarding with the HIV/AIDS Education in a Blended Learning Environment by Dr. Supachai A. Basit, RMT, PhD. Dean, School of Medical Technology in Emilio Aguinaldo College-Cavite and the present national President of PSM Inc. He articulated about the constructivist framework of the said subject focusing on the latest surveillance data of Department of Health-National Epidemiology Center (DOH-NEC), the alternative way on how to alleviate or at least mitigate the alarming situation of the increasing cases of HIV/AIDS. Also, he shared in his presentation the comprehensive review of HIV/AIDS concepts apropos to its corresponding teaching strategies (e.g. the use of GIF animation or motion pictures in teaching) and potential evaluation tools ( e.g Critical Thinking on Evaluating through the use of E-learning online site) for the said concepts.
The second lecture was on the subject about the Dengue and Mosquitoes in the Philippine Urban Setting by Prof. Howell T. Ho from St. Luke’s College of Nursing and Trinity University of Asia. He talked about the increasing incidence of dengue that the environment plays a vital role in the spread and proliferation of both the dengue virus and mosquitoes. Likewise, he discussed on how to mitigate its effect due to the changing climate.
The third and last lecturer was Dr. Gil M. Penuliar, a professor from the Institute of Biology, College of Science, University of the Philippines-Diliman. He deliberated his research with regards to the effect of Metronidazole (C6H9N3O3), a compound used in the treatment of infections caused by Trichomonas, Entamoeba, Giardia and bacteria belonging to Bacteroids, Fusobacterium, and Clostridium.
Other activity included was the Paper Presentation of Rochelle Ann R. Corral, DMD, a dentist from University of Nueva Caceres wherein she presented her community-based research concerning with the Bacterial Species and Water Quality on Open Walls and the Incidence of Water-borne Diseases in Coastal Communities.
The symposium was ended with the distribution of certificates of appearance and participation to all participants.
