UNEP Engineering team wins in the 2013 National Bridge Building Competition

Twenty two (22) competing chapters coming from different colleges and universities in the country, including the Engineering team from the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP)  vied for the much coveted honor of being adjudged as the best bridge builder during the 17th National Bridge Building

Competition held June 28 at the Subic Bay Exhibition and Convention Center, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Olongapo City.

Finishing an hour ahead of the scheduled time, the UNEP Engineering team composed of Sonny Labrador, Ace Buena, Jo Angelo Moran, Juvelyn Tasarra and Elsie Agnas built their masterpiece in two hours   - a warren truss bridge, and came second after the judge’s deliberation.

The activity was an annual competition sponsored by the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, Inc. (PICE) under the auspices of PICE National Student Chapter Affairs Committee. The contenders have to convince the juror of their work’s strength- to-weight ratio which is the main criterion of the competition.

Once the bridge has been turned in for testing, alteration of any part is no longer allowed. Only two members of the team shall be allowed to assist the judges during the testing.

UNEP Coaches-  Engineers Bartolome Luceña and Bernaliza Bermido have specifically and patiently guided the team on coming up with the bridge design.  After the competition, they commended the team for the cooperation and persistence in making it on the winning list.

UNEP President Atty. Remelisa Alfelor-Moraleda also conveyed her congratulatory words to the UNEP team for the job well done.

“National competitions like this always brings a lot of pressure to the contestants and coming up with a masterpiece is indeed a gargantuan task for them.  Yet with their trainings under the guiding notes of their coaches, I am confident that they would bring good news when they get home. Congratulations to the team and more winnings to come,” Moraleda quips.

It will be recalled that in July 2011, another batch of UNEP Engineering team brought home the top plum during the 13th National Bridge Building Competition during the 12th National Civil Engineering Student Summit held in Legaspi City (UNEP)
