Soho to UNEP graduates: Stay humble, discover new horizons
IRIGA CITY --- After receiving the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Literature, HonorisCausa bestowed by the University of Northeastern Philippines (UNEP) upon her, Maria Jessica AspirasSoho, an internationally renowned broadcast journalists and one of the pillars of the Philippine broadcast industry faced the graduates and sent pieces of advises.
“Do not be afraid to try, stay humble and don’t hesitate to discover new things. If there is an opportunity for you, don’t miss it. We are in a very competitive job market, information is just a click away so never miss a chance to open your doors to new learning—the opportunities are endless,” Soho stated.
Soho shared how she humbly started before gaining all the accolades that she has now. A UP College of Mass Communication graduate, Soho slowly inched herself up to become one of the great figures in the Philippine broadcast industry. She fondly recalled how she used to write long transcriptions of interviews, do small errands, and put make up on their guests if their make-up artist failed to come in time.
“You might want to ask? Yes, I have already applied make-up on the face of Mike Enriquez. This and every little deed no matter how small and insignificant, I have done with passion. Perhaps, I am here in front of you to tell my story, so that I can inspire others.”
Soho went on to tell her inspiring tale of life’s melees and success. At the age of 8, her mother died of breast cancer. This left her facing her struggles as a young child but never look at this unfortunate event as a hindrance to reach for her dreams and make a difference.
“For every blessing that you received, pay it forward,”Soho added.
UNEP President Atty. RemelisaAlfelor-Moraleda who conferred the academic degree to Soho also thanked the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for granting their request and for making UNEP’s 67th Commencement Exercises more significant by adding the special academic convocation.
“Soho’s records undeniably speak of a well-disciplined woman, a picture of a true public servant who never got swayed of power and money. Her humility is beyond appreciation, her passion and dedication is indeed worth emulating,” Moraleda said.
Moraleda also took the opportunity to convey her message to UNEP graduates.
“Thank you for choosing a UNEP education. We feel sad seeing you leave the portals of this university but with much hope, we are filled with joy as we see you grow. Do your best. Make UNEP proud.” (UNEP)
